Heating Up in the Heat

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It wasn't just the temperature heating up Thursday morning as California Baptist University came out blazing with a 4-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino.
"After a long preseason, we are very happy to finally get the season under way, and obviously a 4-0 win is a great way to start," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "CSUSB is a good team, and with this stifling weather, we felt it was important to put them away early rather than dragging it out and expending more energy than necessary."
The Lancers open the season 1-0-0, while the Coyotes start with a 0-1-0 mark.
"I think today was great," said Aidan Apodaca. "I think the dynamic of the team is better than last year. We started off strong this year and I think we're just looking to put teams down early and just keep that going."
Like he did last year, Apodaca found the back multiple times, finishing with two goals in the match. In CBU's 2016 season opener, Apodaca scored a hat trick in a 3-2 win over Saint Martin's.
It didn't take long for Apodaca to catch fire, capitalizing in the ninth minute of action. Victor Aguirre sent a long ball in over the Coyote defense, allowing Apodaca to muscle off a defender and tuck it away back post.
The senior almost scored 30 seconds later, but the CSUSB goalkeeper managed to make the save.
CBU kept its foot on the gas and Apodaca struck again in the 27th minute. Sebastian Wiesboeck put Apodaca in on a breakaway with the goalkeeper, where he kept his composure and tapped in the second goal of the day, 2-0.
Seven minutes later, Wiesboeck capitalized. After CBU drew a foul about 25 yards out, Wiesboeck stepped up to the ball and curled it into the near post to give his team a 3-0 cushion heading into halftime.
The Lancers put the final dagger in with less than 10 minutes to play. Freshman Preston Judd challenged the CSUSB goalkeeper with a hard-to-handle shot from inside the 18-yard box, but the Coyote managed to bat it away. It wasn't out of danger yet, however, and Caley Powers headed it home, 4-0.
CBU turns right around to host Cal State San Marcos on Saturday at 10 a.m., looking to stay hot.
"It was a good team performance, but it's just one game and we have a long journey in front of us," said Michaelson. "Now it's all about recovering and preparing for CSU San Marcos."
