RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 12-ranked California Baptist University has made a name for itself already after being named the team to beat in the PacWest. Friday evening, the Lancers dominated their competition, even without running everyone.
"I thought it was a good opener," said coach Ben Gall. "UC San Diego is a good team, we thought we were better than them and I think we stacked up against them better than we thought."
The Lancers, who rank fourth in the NCAA Division II West Region, finished with 19 team points. UC San Diego took second with 41 points, while Riverside Community College finished with 98 points.
Michael Lowrie led the Lancers with a first-place time of 18 minutes, 44.4 seconds. It was sparked by a late kick, with about 50 meters till the finish, as Lowrie sprinted past a Triton to win the event.
"I think we did great," said Lowrie. "This is the beginning of our training, everyone's kinda at the same level right now.
He also added how his teammates kept him going throughout the race, especially important with the heat playing a factor on the day.
"The first 5,000 meters of the race was the full team all together," said Lowrie. "If they weren't there, I definitely wouldn't have won this race."
Not far behind Lowrie was Dennis Messmer, who took third place with a final time of 18:56.2. He started a pouring in of gold jerseys as Mirco Zenzen (19:02.0), Simon Bedard (19:07.9) and Jacob Boatman (19:09.1) came in fourth through sixth.
"I was proud of Michael, he ran a good race," said Gall. "Dennis ran really strong, along with Mirco. It was just a good start to the season."
Jonah Ross crossed the finish line with a time of 19:16.7, sprinting past a Triton in the final 20 meters of the race for eighth place.
The Lancers will prepare hard for the next three weeks before heading to San Francisco for the SF State Invitational on Sept. 22.
