PHOENIX – A dual between two future conference opponents played out in dramatic fashion, with California Baptist University giving Grand Canyon a run for its money in a 162.50-136.50 loss to the Lopes.
The Lancers logged four individual victories, with Zach Parry sweeping both diving boards, while Alexis Ohmar and Scott Tolman each won an event in the swimming pool.
Tolman nearly set two Reese Aquatics Center records on Saturday. He picked up the first when he won the 200-yard breaststroke in two minutes, .33 seconds to shatter the previous pool record by more than five seconds (2:05.61) and break the NCAA Division II consideration time (2:00.88). He would have had a pool record in the 100 breast, too, when he clocked in at 56.27, but his B cut was just out touched by Grand Canyon's Youssef El Kamash (56.12).
Ohmar highlighted CBU's dominance in freestyle events when he won the 200 free in 1:41.53. Jerome Heidrich (1:41.62) and Brandon Schuster (1:42.00) took second and third in the event, respectively, with Adrien Deloffre also coming in fifth (1:44.59).
Parry won the 3-meter with 312.35 points and was victorious on the 1-meter board (288.25), with both scores surpassing the D-II qualification marks again. Garret Chew took third on one (256.35) and three meter (246).
"They continue to get results, with Zach leading the way," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said of his divers. "He won both boards and dove extremely consistent, with great poise as he approached every dive. He is starting to find his stride as we near the championship segment of our season.
"Garret had a strong showing on both boards. He has worked really hard to get his degree of difficulty to where it is and his work has potential to pay off at conference and nationals."
Tolman was far from done and finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley (1:53.58), with Schuster (1:54.08) and Sean Foster (1:57.65) coming in third and fourth.
There was more depth on display for the Lancers in distance events. They swept second through fifth in the 1000 free, thanks to Robert Griffith (9:48.35), Tanner Shore (9:56.20), Josh Fluetsch (9:57.79) and Sakeri Holter (10:40.95). The order was mixed up in the 500 free, with Shore finishing runner-up (4:43.08), Griffith in third (4:46.81), Ohmar taking fourth (4:48.11) and Fluetsch coming in at No. 5 (4:48.31).
Four Lancers secured top-six spots in the 100 free, as well. Heidrich (46.37) and Ohmar (46.51) were the top pair in second and third place, while Bernardo Valentim (47.76) and Josh Walters (48.27) took fifth and sixth.
Heidrich took second a third time individually in the 50 free (21.21). Walters (21.33) wound up in third in for CBU, while Valentim (21.57) and Jacob Leahy (21.61) were fifth and sixth in the sprint.
Leahy impressed in the backstroke events, as well, taking second in the 100 (51.37) and 200 (1:54.41). Walters had a runner-up swim of his own in the 100 fly (50.94), while Quiroga finished second in the 200 fly (1:54.61) and third in the 100 fly (51.51).
Deloffre also took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.05), with Foster (2:09.00) in fifth. Foster also took fourth in the 100 breast (58.88).
Along with all the individual success, the Lancers finished second in both the 200-medley and 400-free relays. Leahy, Tolman, Quiroga and Walters swam the 200-medley in 1:32.35, while Heidrich, Deloffre, Valentim and Ohmar finished the 400 free in 3:05.27.
