Last Seconds Victory

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. — With less than 10 seconds left in regulation, Sebastian Wiesbock scored to lift California Baptist University 2-1 over the University of Incarnate Word Friday night.
"We played really well for the most part tonight," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We created a lot of chances and probably should have put it away earlier, but the guys worked very hard and the UIW keeper made some big saves. For our part, we need to be a bit more clinical, but it's always difficult to win on the road in the WAC and in the end we got the three points."
The Lancers turned on the pressure early, but didn't find the back of the net until five minutes before halftime. Wiesbock collected a free ball about 25 yards out and laced a through ball onto the path of Brian Gonzalez. The redshirt freshman took a touch and placed it far post to put his team up 1-0 at halftime.
Almost five minutes into the second half, however, UIW equalized.
Matthias Binder looked like he might have the answer for CBU in the 71st minute, firing a shot off a free kick from 25 yards out, but it was pushed up and over the crossbar by the Cardinal goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, Preston Judd had a chance, firing off a rocket of a shot from just eight yards out, but the goalkeeper managed to get his hands on it to keep it out of the net.
As time wound down, the Lancers didn't give up and found the game-winner with nine seconds left in regulation. Niklas Haakenstad played a ball through to Wiesbock, who dribbled through the Cardinal defense and tucked a tough shot from the left side of the six-yard box into the side netting to lift his team 2-1.
"Basti was great all night for us," said Michaelson. "He has been the best player on the field numerous times this year without getting the accolades his play deserves so I'm glad he gets a moment in the spotlight tonight. He deserves it."
The Lancers improve to 7-7-1 overall, 3-4-0 in WAC with the win, while the Cardinals drop to 1-11-1 on the year, 1-6-0 in conference.
CBU remains in Texas for one more game, taking on The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Pacific. The Lancers then return home for their last two games of the year on the Lancer Soccer Field, before closing the season out at CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 3.
