CBU Clashes with Top WAC Opponent

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University has had tough test after tough test in its Western Athletic Conference debut. The Lancers battled Utah Valley – which sat second in the conference coming into the game – Friday afternoon, but dropped a 1-0 loss.
CBU moves to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the WAC with the result, while the Wolverines improve to 6-5-0 on the year and 3-1-0 in conference to now sit in a tie for first with No. 7-ranked Air Force.
"Every one of these games we have lost, the games could have gone either way," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We've had a bit of bad luck, but unfortunately the script for each of these, at least the parts we control, has been to give away a really poor goal, get frustrated and then struggle to score. We are young and learning, but we just have to get better."
Despite going down a goal and a man in the second half, the Lancers battled until the final whistle blew. With only 30 seconds on the clock, Nick Forrester looked like he might send the game into overtime after redirecting a corner kick on goal with his head.
Unfortunately, the Wolverine goalkeeper made a big-time one-handed save to push the shot up and over the bar to keep it out of the net. Time expired before the Lancers could get another chance, finalizing the 1-0 result.
CBU had other chances in the match as well, including a long-range shot from Matthias Binder in the 27th minute. The UVU goalkeeper couldn't catch it cleanly, but the Wolverine defense cleared it out of danger before the Lancers could get another look on it.
Preston Judd tried to curl in a shot from 25 yards out after Utah Valley conceded a hand ball, but it was just wide in the 38th minute.
There's no rest for the Lancers as they host seventh-ranked Air Force on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kick off.
"We have a tough game again on Sunday and the one thing that the guys have to give is their best effort," said Michaelson. "We don't have time to put our heads down and feel bad for ourselves. We need fighters right now and if we do that, then we can absolutely turn this around and finish the season strong."
