RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In one of the final duals of the year, California Baptist University battled but ultimately fell 34-7 to NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield Friday night.
The Lancers drop to 6-6 on the year, while the Roadrunners improve to 6-9 overall.
Daxton Gordon and Nolan Kistler grabbed wins on the day, but other Lancers put up valiant fights as well.
After Bakersfield took a 9-0 lead in the team score, Gordon put CBU back on track with a dominating 14-2 major decision. The 149-pounder wasted little time, grabbing a takedown in the opening three seconds of the bout.
Kalani Tonge of Bakersfield managed to escape, but Gordon got another takedown just 13 seconds before the first expired. Tonge tried to keep Gordon at bay, but the Lancer exploded in the final period. Gordon chose bottom to start and quickly grabbed an escape. He finished with two take downs, a four-point nearfall and two minutes and 42 seconds of riding time to seal the 14-2 victory.
Slater Johnson put up a fight at 157, going into the final period trailing by just one. Bakersfield's Coleman Hammond – the No. 14-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division I – managed to get a takedown, but Johnson had built up 1:38 of riding time to end the bout 5-3.
Kistler, who ranks second in Division II at 174 pounds, has been on a roll and picked up his 10th-straight victory with a 6-2 decision.
Just 10 seconds into the match, Kistler grabbed a takedown and built his lead to 4-1 after the first period. The Roadrunner managed to cut the margin to two points, 4-2, but Kistler chose bottom to start the third and quickly escaped. Almost three minutes (2:44) of riding time handed Kistler the 6-2 victory.
Nick Fiegener, the third-ranked 184-pound wrestler in Division II, had a high-scoring bout. He posted a takedown and two nearfalls – one two-pointer and a four-pointer – in the first period, but Bakersfield snuck away with the 13-11 decision.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow at noon, hosting Simon Fraser for their final matchup before looking to defend their Super Region IV title in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Feb. 23-24.
