JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – Home-course advantage led to California Baptist University recording the lowest score of the tournament in round one of the Joust at Goose Creek on Monday. It gave the Lancers a one-stroke lead on the 20-team field and they then matched that score in round two to increase their lead to six shots going into Tuesday's third and final round.
Ben Hallam and Greg Gonzalez led CBU's bid to defend its home course, as the upperclassmen both shot a combined five-under-par 135 over the first 36 holes Monday at the pristine Goose Creek Golf Club. The two Lancers are tied for the overall lead individually in the 104-player field, with Tuesday's final 18 holes coming on an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
"I am proud of the individual performances we had, we needed everybody to show up to be in position to win with 18 to go," Coach TL Brown said. "We wanted to win last year, but we are really comfortable out here at Goose Creek."
CBU carded a two-over-par 562 with identical one-over 281s in the first two rounds on Monday. It gives the Lancers a six-stroke edge over 16th-ranked Chico State, which is currently in the runner-up position with a 568 (282-286). Dominican stands in third place with a 571 (283-288), while CBU also leads ninth-ranked Colorado-Colorado Springs, which is tied for sixth (577).
"Tomorrow is going to be a big day for us. This is the first time we have been in position to win with a realistic chance this season," Brown said. "It's important for us to not attack those pins, we have some extremely difficult pins tomorrow. Those hole locations are going tough and you can't go at flags; it's going to be about playing smart golf tomorrow. It's going to be a great battle, especially against Chico State. We are just excited to be in position to win."
Gonzalez spearheaded CBU's strong start in round one when he shot five-under-par 65, with the help of seven birdies, including four over his first nine holes. He also played his final two holes two under. In round two, the senior logged four birdies and played his first seven holes two under, with birdies at nine, 12 and 14 after teeing off at the eighth hole. The Riverside native avoided any big numbers down the stretch and finished his last seven holes one over.
"I am so happy for Greg playing some great golf in his last college event in his hometown," Brown said.
An eagle in each round helped Hallam shoot 67 in the opener and 68 in the second round. Four birdies and an eagle came over his first 18 holes and he played his last two holes three-under to shoot CBU up the leader board. The junior transfer added five birdies and another eagle in the second round and finished strong once again with three-under par to log a 68.
"I am really proud of some of the things I saw from Ben," Brown said. "He's been really consistent and so close to winning and he's in position to win this tournament."
While those two share the individual lead, brothers Ivan and Ryan Monsalve are tied for 37th with 146s after both scored in both rounds on Monday. They each had their best performances in round two, with Ryan improving by two strokes from a 74-72 and Ivan Monsalve logging a four-stroke improvement from 75-71.
"I am proud of Ivan and his brother Ryan. Ivan's afternoon round was really important, he birdied three of his last five holes to shoot a number we needed to stay up at the top," Brown said.
Ryan had four birdies in round one and then an eagle in round two to break 75 both times. Ivan had a birdie in round one and then started to heat up over the last 18 with three birdies and an eagle of his own at 17.
"We finished our rounds great, there were some solid finishes," Brown said. "We were in 10th at one point in round one and then we shot to the top down the stretch."
Matt Harris logged four birdies on Monday for a 151 total (76-75) to give the Lancers two impressive drop scores. Jack Solis also had three birdies for a 154 (78-76) while competing as an individual for CBU.
