TURLOCK, Calif. – A victory at its home tournament three weeks ago has California Baptist University playing its best golf of the season. The Lancers continued their top form and hold the overall lead going into the final 18 holes of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, which will play 18 more holes Tuesday.
CBU shot identical 291s in Monday's first two rounds for a six-over-par total of 582. Cal State East Bay trails the Lancers by three in the runner-up spot (585), while host Stanislaus State is in third (588). Concordia of Oregon (589) is in fourth, while 15th-ranked Chico State and Dominican are tied for fifth with 593s.
As day one of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational went on at the Turlock Golf & Country Club, the Lancers got better and better. CBU grabbed a three-stroke lead in round one, as all four scorers shot 74 or better. The Lancers maintained their advantage when all five golfers shot 75 or better in round two.
All five CBU athletes rank in the top-23 of the 77-player field. Both Ben Hallam and Jack Solis are tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard with 146s, while Matt Harris and Greg Gonzalez are tied for 13th with 147s. Ryan Monsalve is two shots off the rest of his teammates in 23rd (149).
A trio of golfers are tied for the individual lead with 143s: Dominican's Ty Macias, Jeff Yamaguchi of Stanislaus State and Chico State's Nicholas Caputo.
Hallam logged rounds of 72 and 74 on Monday. The junior birdied four times and played the back nine two-under, with three birdies over that stretch, to finish his 18 holes even-par 72. He logged three more birdies in the second round to card a 74.
Solis logged a career-best round both times out on Monday with 73s. The true freshman was extremely consistent in the first round, with just two bogeys and a birdie making up his one-over opener. The La Quinta native was three-over going into his final four holes in round two but logged three birdies heading into the clubhouse to shoot 73 again.
Harris matched Hallam for the team-best score in round one with a 72 and then logged two birdies to card a 75 in the final round of the day. An eagle highlighted his first 18 holes, while the freshman also played his final four holes even par in both rounds.
Gonzalez posted a big improvement on Monday, bettering his score by nine strokes (78-69) to tie for the third-best individual round in the whole field. He bogeyed just twice in his second round and birdied five holes to finish three-under.
Monsalve, meanwhile, had four birdies to start the day and finished the first round two-under on his last five holes. He also finished strong to tie for scoring honors in round two (75). The true freshman triple bogeyed at hole 11 and doubled the next hole. He then posted five pars and three birdies over his final eight holes to finish an impressive three-over.
