GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Five top-20 ranked teams in NCAA Division II join California Baptist University in its regular-season finale at the Mustang Intercollegiate this week. The Lancers jumped out to a second-place tie after round one of the 36-hole event on Monday at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
All five CBU golfers carded 73s or better in round one to give the Lancers a one-over-par 289 score as a team. It leaves the 16th-ranked Lancers seven strokes off third-ranked Dallas Baptist, which leads the 20-team field with a six-under 282.
Halfway through the tournament, CBU is in place to improve on its ranking with the D-II postseason quickly approach. Twelfth-ranked Tarleton State is tied for second place with the Lancers, who also lead No. 14 West Texas A&M (fourth, 290), Colorado Mesa (fifth, 296) and No. 19 St. Edward's (298).
The Lancers will next compete in the PacWest Championships April 23-25 at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz. where they will look to defend their three-straight conference titles. Afterward, CBU plans to compete at the D-II Super Region IV Championships (May 7-9) at the Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango, Colo. The D-II Championships are May 16-19 at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
Another total-team effort from CBU was led by Jocelyn Chee on Monday. The true freshman maintained her strong play by shooting two-under-par 70 on Monday to put herself in a second-place tie individually. Chee is coming off consecutive top-three individual finishes at the Otter Invitational and Lancer Joust where she carded a 72 and 147 (70-77), respectively.
Chee bogeyed just one on Monday and birdied three times to counteract that. She also finished strong by going one-under on her final four holes and two under on her final six.
Erica Wang, Samantha Martirez, Kristyna Abrahamova and Yifei "Sunny" Wang are all tied for 19th place in the 104-golfer field after they all shot 73s for CBU. Sunny birdied twice on Monday, on her first and second-to-last holes, and also finished her final four and 12 holes even par.
Erica got hot over a five-hole stretch from two to six where she logged all three of her birdies on the day. She would also play her final four holes one-over. Martirez and Abrahamova birdied twice on Monday and both also played their final four holes one-over par.
