CHICO, Calif. — After beating a ranked team the day before, No. 14-ranked California Baptist University faced another ranked foe Friday morning. It took extra innings, but the No. 2-ranked Chico State took a 3-0 decision from the Lancers.
In the double-elimination tournament, CBU wasn't out and faced No. 21-ranked UC San Diego later in the day. The Lancers exploded for three runs in the sixth to win the game 3-0 and stay alive in the tournament.
CBU improves to 35-11, while the Tritons end their year with a 36-19 mark. Wildcats improve to 52-3 on the year and will face the Lancers on Saturday.
Amanda Springstead finished the day 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI to help the Lancers advance in the tournament.
In similar fashion from yesterday, the first game was pretty quiet for the first inning as both pitchers didn't allow hits until Cheyann Tucker broke through with a base hit up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats managed to get the third out, however, before the Lancers could send her home.
The Lancers looked like they might get the walk off in the bottom of the seventh after Halle Rosario led off with a hard-knocked double to right center. Two walks loaded the bases with two outs, but the Wildcats kept the game scoreless to force extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Chico State broke through, scoring three runs after loading up the bases.
Down but not out, the Lancers looked to rally in the bottom half of the frame, putting a runner on with two outs. Unfortunately for the Lancers, they couldn't put any runs on the board to drop the game 3-0.
After UCSD won the first elimination game, the Lancers and Tritons faced off again late in the day.
Caitlyn Lloyd led the game off with a walk and Brittany Galvez joined her on base with a base hit line drive to right center. The Lancers proceeded to load up the bases, but couldn't send any home to keep the game scoreless.
In the top of the fifth, Galvez started a two-out rally with a base hit past a diving shortstop. Soraya Shahbazian kept the inning going with a full-count walk. Hannah Thieroff followed in similar suit to load the bases, but the Tritons got out of the jam.
The Lancers finally broke through in the top of the sixth as senior Springstead doubled to send in a run, before Lloyd knocked an RBI single to make it 2-0. Soraya Shahbazian tucked a base hit just inside fair territory in right field to send another run, giving CBU a nice 3-0 cushion.
UCSD needed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going, but Ciara Stapp drew two fly balls and a grounder to seal the 3-0 victory.
CBU gets a rematch with Chico State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., needing to win twice to advance to the Super Regional Championship next week.
