RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final game of the regular season, No. 15-ranked California Baptist University took care of business with two wins over Academy of Art on Senior Night. The Lancers came from behind in the opener to beat the Urban Knights 6-4, before sealing the doubleheader sweep with a walk-off, two-run homer to win the second 2-0.
CBU improves to 33-10 overall, 25-7 in the PacWest. Academy of Art drops to 39-14 on the year, 22-8 in conference.
ART U took a four-run lead, scoring two runs in the first and two in the third, before CBU had a chance to respond.
Anise Avalos led the bottom of the third off with a double to the gap in right center and made her way to third, despite the Knights getting two outs. Brittany Galvez then singled up the middle to send Avalos home and was joined on base by Soraya Shahbazian, who doubled to right.
Hannah Thieroff kept the two-out rally going with a walk to load the bases, before Ali Subia singled to right to send two more runners home, 4-3.
The Lancers tied the game up in the fourth after Galvez doubled just inside fair territory in left field to send Avalos home from third, 4-4.
CBU kept momentum in its favor by locking down its defense before taking the lead in the sixth. Once again, Avalos led off with a hit and came home on a Caitlyn Lloyd single, 5-4. Lloyd then came home on a base hit from Galvez to give the Lancers a two-run cushion, 6-4.
The Knights tried to put a two-out rally together of their own in the top of the seventh, putting a runner on, but the Lancers wouldn't have it as they sealed the 6-4 victory.
It took a while in the nightcap, but CBU got what it was looking for in its last chance at the plate. Lloyd stepped up to the plate with one out and looked like she might end it from there, blasting a shot deep to left center that bounced off the wall for a double. Galvez then sealed the deal, turning on a pitch and sending it over the fence in a similar spot to lift the Lancers 2-0.
CBU finds out its postseason fate on Monday at the NCAA Division II Selection Show, which airs on ncaa.com at 7 a.m. Pacific. The Lancers were the No. 5 team in the West Region in the latest rankings, needing to be one of the eight teams called on Monday.
