Hitting a Milestone for Michaelson

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — In its very first Division I game, California Baptist University put an exclamation point on it with a 3-0 victory over Saint Peter's Friday afternoon.
The Lancers start the season 1-0-0, while the Peacocks open the year 0-1-0.
Coach Coe Michaelson picked up his 100th career victory with the result, while Preston Judd opened the year with a hat trick, scoring all three goals for CBU. It's the Lancers' seventh hat trick in NCAA history.
"The first Division I win is great," said Michaelson. "We're excited about the journey ahead with a lot of new teams; we're excited and optimistic about what we can do."
Less than 10 minutes into the game, Judd struck first. Brian Gonzalez won a tackle in the middle and dished it out to Sebastian Wiesbock, who played a long ball into the corner. Oliver Bryneus ran onto it and sent it across the face of the box. The Peacock goalkeeper tried to cut the pass off but missed, allowing Judd to put it into the back of the net, 1-0.
Thirteen minutes later, Judd got another look on goal, but Saint Peter's managed to kick it off the line to keep the game 1-0.
The Lancer defense didn't allow a Peacock shot until the 35th minute of action, but it was well off target. Two minutes later, however, Saint Peter's got its most dangerous look on goal when it was awarded a free kick just outside the box. Albert Escuin came up with a big diving stop to keep CBU's 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Like it had in the first half, CBU came out strong in the second to put the pressure on Saint Peter's. It paid off in the 59th minute as Chris Heckenberg found Bryneus on the left side of the field to send in another dangerous ball into the box. Once again, Judd found himself open and hammered it home to double the Lancers' lead, 2-0.
Five minutes later, Matthias Binder took a shot from distance, but it just sailed over the bar.
In the 85th minute, Judd put the final dagger in to complete the hat trick. Wiesbock picked up his second assist of the year as Judd all but sealed the 3-0 victory.
"It was a good, all around team effort," said Judd. "They got me the ball a lot – I probably should've scored more of my chances, but they gave me a lot of opportunities to score. I was happy with the team win today."
The Peacocks had one last chance in the 87th minute, putting a header on frame, but Escuin made the save to keep his first shutout of the year.
"Couldn't have asked for anything more [to start the season off with a win]," said Michaelson. "If you had asked me before the game if I would take a 3-0 win, I would've said 'absolutely.' In hindsight, we probably should've had more, but that will come as we get sharp and improve. There are some things we can improve on, but we're really excited and optimistic about the season ahead."
