Learning Lessons on the Road

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — To close out its first road trip of NCAA Division I action, California Baptist University faced some tough weather and competition at Manhattan College on Monday. It was a battle in very humid weather, but the Jaspers held on for a 3-1 victory.
CBU drops to 1-1-0 with the result, while Manhattan improves to 2-0-0.
"Today was a difficult game against a very big, physical team," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "After giving up an early goal on a set piece, we fought our way back in and were unfortunate not to score a second [goal] late in the half. In the second half, we came out in complete control and against the run of play gave away a very sloppy goal on a corner kick. From there on out we didn't do enough. We may have had plenty of possession, but we can be better and we have to learn that mistakes are punished ruthlessly at this level. We take that lesson from the game and look forward to another tough road game on Friday."
The Jaspers got on the board first with a goal in the seventh minute and almost got another quick second just a minute later, but goalkeeper Albert Escuin came off his line to grab the breakaway save and keep the Lancers in the game, down 1-0.
CBU turned on the pressure in the final minutes of the half, creating multiple chances looking for the equalizer.
It came in the 42nd minute as Matthias Binder found Nicklas Haakenstad making a run on the left side of the field. Haakenstad passed it off to an overlapping Linus Mansson, who sent a high-arching ball deep to the back post. It bounced off the post, clipped the Jasper goalkeeper and went into the back of the net to put the Lancers even at 1-1.
Victor Aguirre looked like he might give CBU the lead right before halftime, firing off a rocket of a shot about 35 yards out. It nicked the post, but unfortunately bounced out instead of in to put the teams into the break with a 1-1 tie.
Despite the Lancers coming out of the half attacking early, the Jaspers would find the go-ahead goal and add on some insurance late in the game to seal the 3-1 victory.
CBU continues life on the road as it heads to Gonzaga for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
