SPOKANE, Wash. — California Baptist University came out hot and didn't cool off en route to a blazing 5-2 victory at Gonzaga Friday night.

The Lancers improve to 2-1-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-1-2 overall.

"Our guys came in with a great mentality tonight," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We are a very young team but when we have that focus about us, tonight is a great example of what we are capable of. I doubt that anyone else will come in and score five goals here this year, so it was a really impressive attacking display. With that said, there are still things we can do better."

Within the first 10 minutes of action, Preston Judd had two chances and was just starting to heat up.

After Gonzaga gave up a free kick in its defensive third in the 23^rd minute, Jordan Lane sent a cross into the box, where Chris Heckenberg headed it back into the center of the box and Judd put it away, 1-0. Just two minutes later, Judd doubled CBU's lead. Heckenberg slipped a ball in behind the Bulldog defense, allowing Judd to run in and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.

It didn't stop from there. Gonzaga gave up a penalty kick in the 39^th minute and Nicklas Haakenstad put it away to put CBU in front 3-0 heading into halftime.

The Zags looked to turn things around, converting a penalty of their own in the 54^th minute, before finding the back of the net once again in the 61^st minute to cut the score to 3-2.

Not even a minute later, however, Judd completed his second hat trick of the season. Brian Gonzalez stripped the ball away from a Bulldog and played a ball through on the left side for Judd to run onto and put CBU back up by two, 4-2.

With just 10 seconds left on the clock, CBU put the final dagger in with an exclamation point. Judd drove in a ball to Oliver Bryneus deep in Zag territory. Bryneus dribbled past a defender and ripped a shot into the upper corner of the far post to seal the 5-2 victory for CBU.

"At this level you can't get too proud of yourself because there's another tough one around the corner," said Michaelson. "We put in a great performance tonight and now we need to replicate that in San Diego on Monday. "

The Lancers head to San Diego on Monday for another late-night kickoff, before finally coming home to host Cal State Fullerton next Friday, September 7, at 4:00 p.m.
