LAS VEGAS — For its second Western Athletic Conference game, California Baptist University drew another tough opponent in UNLV. The Lancers – who opened WAC action with a 2-1 victory over preseason favorite Seattle U – dropped a close 1-0 loss to the Rebels on the road Friday night.
CBU falls to 5-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the WAC. UNLV improves to 6-5-0 on the year, 1-1-0 in conference. The Rebels, who were predicted to finish second in the WAC, ended last season with a loss to eventual WAC Tournament Champion Seattle U in the semifinal round on penalty kicks.
The Lancers created chances in the first 10 minutes of action, resulting in back-to-back corner kicks, but just couldn't get a clean look at the goal.
It was UNLV who would find the back of the net, however, after drawing a free kick about 35 yards out in the 41st minute.
"I thought we played very well for the first 40 minutes," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We made one mistake and gave away a goal on a set piece. After that, our reaction was not what it needed to be. We are a young team and we are learning, but we can't put our head down when something goes wrong. We have to react and fight our way back."
The Lancers had a dangerous chance at an equalizer just before the first half expired, as Matthias Binder fired off a free kick about 30 yards out that knocked off the crossbar. Junior Guerra followed on the rebound, but his shot was blocked to send CBU into halftime trailing by a goal.
Late in the game, CBU put on the pressure to find the equalizer. After his first shot was blocked, Oliver Bryneus got off another attempt, but the Rebel goalkeeper made the save to secure the 1-0 victory for UNLV.
"At this level, it's very difficult to win on the road, but a split on the road is never a bad weekend so that's what we have to focus on at this point," said Michaelson. "It's all about next game and knowing that it's a new game."
The Lancers head to Grand Canyon for a Sunday night kickoff. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start time.
