RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University not only set a new attendance record in its second-ever match in the CBU Events Center, but produced one of the best attended matches in all of California this season.
The 3,418 fans who witnessed CBU's five-set Western Athletic Conference win over CSU Bakersfield Monday marked just the seventh time this season 3,000-plus fans attended a collegiate volleyball match in California.
"It shows the support our community and our students have for volleyball," Coach Branden Higa said of the fan support. "We have always been one of the best attended programs in Southern California.
"The energy was off the charts last night. We have great fans here in Van Dyne and when we go into the Events Center it just takes it to another level. The great thing about our fans and our students is they just know the game of volleyball. They were with us at every single point. The celebration at the end was amazing, and to have all 3,400 of them still there was awesome. We told the team after the match that's something you build programs off of, performances like that in front of a crowd like that."
