HOUSTON – California Baptist men's soccer began its final road trip of the season with a loss at Houston Baptist University by a score of 2-1.
"Tonight was a reminder that at the Division I level you have to compete hard for every single win," Head Coach Coe Michaelson said after the game, adding, "we have two games left and the opportunity to have a good conference season. I fully expect us to rebound and bring the correct mentality and effort into Sunday's game."
This is just the Lancers second match against the Huskies all-time, but it evens the series at one apiece.
The first half began with HBU rattling off three good chances in the first ten minutes, but walking away with nothing to show for them.
The Lancers capitalized on their first really good look on goal after being awarded a free kick from just inside the normal corner kick area. Daniel Johnsson flicked in the pass with his head into the netting of the far post to give the Lancers a lead in the 13th minute.
The goal was the freshman's first of his CBU career. The free kick came from Oliver Bryneus who was credited with his second assist in as many games, and fourth of the season.
After taking the one goal lead into halftime, the Lancers returned to the pitch looking for more, but it would be the Huskies who would find it.
Houston Baptist would net a pair of goals within 10 minutes of the start of the second half, giving them a one goal lead what would ultimately be the final score.
Escuin would make a total of six saves in the game, all of which came in the first half.
The men will close out the road trip with a match against the Kansas City Roos on Sunday, kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm Pacific.
