LOS ANGELES – California Baptist University ended its weekend at the Pepperdine Winter Invite with a bang by winning two events, posting four other top-three finishes and setting a new program record.
"We had a really good third day, and rallied for a lot of points to take third place and beat some really strong teams," Coach Rick Rowland said.
Robert Moseley and Quinn Birtles won the 200-yard backstroke and 200 butterfly at East Los Angeles College on Sunday. Birtles set a new CBU record with his win in the 200 fly, with a time of one minute, 47.04 seconds, which shattered the previous best of 1:47.48 set by Jan Tichy in 2006-07.
"One of our oldest records from our Hall of Famer, Tichy, went down; it was a great swim from Quinn," Rowland said.
Birtles' day was even more impressive day considering he also swam and took sixth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:46.24 that improved upon his previous best of 15:49.40 and ranks third in Lancer history.
"Quinn went to another level today, that's one of the toughest doubles you can do," Rowland said. "You have to have some training to pull that off. That was definitely an impressive grind, he put a lot of time in in the pool."
Moseley nearly set a new personal record in the 200 back, as his winning time of one minute 45.35 seconds was just .02 of a second off his best of 1:45.33, which ranks third in CBU history.
'That was an impressive win for Robbie, that's a solid time for this point of the season," Rowland said.
CBU posted runner-up swims in the 200 breast, thanks to Sean Foster, and the 400-freestyle relay. Foster took seconds in the 200 breast in 1:59.58, and was even slightly faster in the prelims (1:59.32). Jacob Leahy, Josh Walters, Kyle White and Matthew Niculae made up the second-place, 400-free relay team, as they clocked in at 2:55.79.
The Lancers were most dominant in the 200 fly on Saturday, as David Miller also took third in 1:49.01 after going 1:48.82 in prelims. Both were improvements on his personal best of 1:48.90.
Leahy ended his strong weekend by taking third in the 100 free (44.65). Walters (46.86) and Niculae (45.30) also eighth and ninth in the event, respectively. Ryan Schade (2:04.07) and Colton Babcock (2:05.43) both finished ninth and 10th in the 200 breast, as well, while Christian Meyer had another top-10 swim for CBU in the 1650 free (15:59.60), which cracked CBU's all-time, top-10 list.
"A lot of our returning swimmers are way ahead of last year with their times near the middle of the season." Rowland said. "I am pretty excited about where we are at this point."
