CBU Battles Another WAC Title Contender

RIVERSIDE – It was an offensive slugfest when California Baptist University and Kansas City met for their second Western Athletic Conference matchup of the season.
The Lancers logged their sixth-best hitting percentage of the season in a four-set loss to the Roos (23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-19) on Monday night in the Van Dyne Gym. Cassidy Dennison and Sydney Marks led the offense with 16 and 14 kills, respectively, while Nicole Abreu compiled a match-high 19 digs.
CBU hit .269 overall in the match (59-20-145), sided out at 59.6 percent and had a 7-4 advantage in aces. Six Lancers logged at least six kills. Hana Okuhara recorded her sixth double-double of the season, with 24 assists, 10 digs and two aces.
Christine Graf (nine), Ellie Voss (eight), Elizabeth Gilley (seven) and Yagoda Jedrzejczak (five) all had at least five kills on the night. Ellie Voss hit .375 clip (8-2-16), while Dennison and Marks posted respective percentages of .333 (16-4-36) and .243 (14-5-37).
Gilley added nine digs and two aces to her stat line, while Jedrzejczak added two assists, as well. Natalie Zimmerer finished with 20 assists and six digs.
CBU's offense carried it to a set-one win, as it hit .500 (17-1-32) overall. Kansas City led 22-19 in the set, but CBU ended it on a 6-1 run. Elizabeth Gilley had two kills in the run, including the winner to avoid overtime, while Christine Graf and Yagoda Jedrzejczak added a kill and ace, respectively.
Kansas City kept its hopes of a WAC title alive, as the Roos are in third place at 13-9 overall and 9-3 in conference, while CBU moves to 11-14, 5-7.
The Lancers play their final two road matches in the WAC next, with stops at CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m., respectively. CBU plays its final two home matches against Utah Valley Saturday, Nov. 16 and Seattle U on Sunday, Nov. 17.
The Wolverines will serve as CBU's Senior Day match. Four Lancer seniors: Natalie Zimmerer, Yagoda Jedrzejczak, Nicole Abreu and Elizabeth Gilley will be honored before the match.
