Lancers Close Out Drexel for Dual Win

PHILADELPHIA – A strong start and finish led California Baptist University to a 19-16 dual win at Drexel on Saturday. The Lancers won six of the 10 matches, including the first two and four of the last six.
Bryce Buckley, Garrett Strang, Antonio Saldate, Adam Velasquez, Zander Silva and Daxton Gordon were the Lancers' six victors. CBU improves to 2-3 in dual action this season, while the Dragons fall to 4-9 on the year. The Lancers will stay in Philadelphia for a dual at Pennsylvania on Sunday at 10 a.m. PDT.
Buckley had the biggest win of the day for the Lancers that conveniently came on the first match of the dual. Buckley earned an 18-4 major decision victory at 174 pounds over Owen Brooks to give CBU an immediate 4-0 lead.
A narrow 3-2 win at 184 from Strang ran the Lancers' lead to 7-0 two bouts into the day. Drexel responded with consecutive wins to take an 8-7 lead going into the 125 match.
Saldate found himself in a nail-biter tied at 3-3, but closed it out by scoring six of the final seven points for a big 9-4 decision victory.
Velasquez pulled out another close win at 133, 7-2, thanks to a strong third period to give CBU a 13-8 lead.
Decision victories from Silva (7-4) and Gordon (13-8) gave the Lancers a 19-8 cushion with just two matches remaining. CBU's final two wrestlers made sure the lead stood up, with each avoiding pins before securing the 19-16 win.
