HOUSTON – California Baptist University made quite the debut on day one of the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday at the CRWC Natatorium.
With a target on their back after being selected as the pre-meet favorite by the WAC coaches, the Lancers secured top-three spots in both relays, while setting two new school records in the process.
It puts CBU in fourth place with out of the seven teams with 83 points. Grand Canyon leads the way with 114, while Wyoming (95) and UNLV (94) round out the top four. Air Force is one point off the Lancers in fifth (82).
"We can make up some points with individual events and with our depth. We could really pick up some points in the 500 free and 200 IM, but so can everybody else," Coach Rick Rowland said. "It's a lot harder to win the conference title flat out. It's a completely different meet, and it's going to be a dog fight. We will see how it plays out, we could rally but it would be a late rally. There's plenty of time."
CBU got off to a great start in its first-ever WAC Championship race. The Lancers' Jacob Leahy, Scott Tolman, Justin Quiroga and Josh Walters finished runner-up in the conference's 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 27.65 seconds.
It was not only well under the automatic qualifying time for the 2019 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship of 1:32.99, but set a new CBU record by .22 of a second (1:27.87). Grand Canyon led the entire way in the race, but the Lancers had to hold off Air Force (1:27.73) and CSU Bakersfield (1:28.15) for second place.
A taste of history was not enough, and the Lancers' team of Quiroga, Brandon Schuster, Colton Babcock and Jerome Heidrich took down the previous school record in the 800-free relay (6:31.59) to take third place in 6:29.27, which was well under the CSCAA time (6:51.99).
"We got two new records tonight, that 800-free relay was pretty stellar," Rowland said. "They were all coming up to me asking if it's a new school record and sure enough it was."
Three Lancers secured top-16 finishes on the 1-meter board. Garret Chew was the lone Lancer to advance to the A final after taking third in prelims with 252.25 points. He took eighth place overall with a 246.20 points.
Tyler Stevens took 13th place on the 1-meter board, with 238.40 points, which was his first-ever conference championship event. Zane Freeman took 15th with a 227.20.
Preliminary competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. Pacific, with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. each day this week. Live stats will be available throughout the week for both swimming and diving. There will be video of diving and swimming prelims on the WAC's Facebook, with the finals being streamed on the WAC Digital Network. For more information, visit the WAC Championship Central.
