ST. GEORGE, Utah – A three-stroke lead tripled into a nine-shot victory for California Baptist University, as it won its second NCAA Division I tournament in its debut season on Friday.
All five Lancers finished in the top 15 of the 84-golfer tournament to lead their team to a win in the 14-team field at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational. CBU has now claimed 18 tournament victories over the last six seasons and 38 since the program began in 2005-06.
"Our focus today was two words, faith and truth," Coach Marc Machado said. "The one question I urged the TEAM to ask themselves through the round was, 'What is the truth about this TEAM?' "This team is resilient, accomplish and always finishes the last part of each round strong."
After putting together the best first 18 holes of the tournament, CBU was one stroke off the top score in the second round, as the team completed a 13-over-par 589 (292-297) after shooting nine-over 297 to end the 36-hole event.
Host Southern Utah took second (598), while South Dakota State (600), Xavier (601) and Oral Roberts (602) rounded out the top five. The Lancers also got a win over the Western Athletic Conference's CSU Bakersfield (13th, 653).
"This was a total TEAM effort, I love that his tournament showed our depth. We dropped a 76 in round one and round two," Machado said.
Samantha Martirez and Jocelyn Chee continued to lead CBU and finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with a 146. Martirez shot three-over-par 75 on Friday to finish her 146 (71-75), while Chee was two-over (72-74).
North Dakota State's Taylor McCorkle earned medalist honors with a 141 (76-65), while Southern Utah's Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan (143) and South Dakota State's Sydney Bormann (145) rounded out the top three.
Erica Wang had the best second round of any Lancer, as a one-over 73 led her to a 10th-place tie with a 148 (75-73).
"Senior and TEAM captain Erica Wang led by example by playing her cumulative last four holes at even for the tournament," Machado said.
A 76 polished off a 150 (74-76) and 13th-place finish for Kristyna Abrahamova. Yifei "Sunny" Wang took 15h with a 151 (76-75).
"I am also very proud of Sunny for battling for the TEAM this whole event. She is working through an injury and didn't hit any drivers today, but it didn't phase her," Machado said. "She is tough as nails and will always fight until the finish."
"The thing I am most proud of today was the attitudes of all five of the ladies. It was our best performance of the year, attitude wise," Machado said. "Attitude and controlling our emotions have always been a focus of this program and our team has truly bought into this."
