CLEVELAND – A trio of victories and record-setting swims helped California Baptist University end the 2018-19 season on a high note with a runner-up finish at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship on Saturday.
CBU totaled 608.5 points to take second place only to Indiana (763). Out of the 25 teams to register a point, the Lancers beat out Texas Christian (third, 535); Grand Canyon (fourth, 495.5); South Carolina (seventh, 476) and Ohio State (eighth, 473.5) just to name a few.
Rick Rowland was named the CSCAA Men's Coach of the Year at the end of the meet at Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium. Jerome Heidrich was crowned the Men's Swimmer of the Meet after he won four events, including two on Saturday, and had two runner-up finishes and another fifth-place mark on the week.
"I think CBU earned a lot of respect nationally at this meet," Rowland said. "There were a lot of teams coming up to us and congratulating us all week. This is a great meet for us, especially during our transition. It's something to not only hang your hat on after a conference meet, but a great preparation tool for us in the future when we are going to the NCAA Championships. It gives you the same training schedule and two-week turnaround from a conference to a national meet."
The Lancers also went out winners and record setters in their final event of the year, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Heidrich led things off for CBU, while Josh Walters, Brandon Schuster and Jacob Leahy closed out the race in a new CBU record of two minutes, 54.39 seconds. It was not only 3.32 seconds faster than the previous program record of 2:57.71 set by Leahy, Walters, Heidrich and Robert Moseley at the Western Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago, but set a new NIC meet record.
Heidrich and Leahy warmed up for the relay by going one-two in the 100 freestyle, with respective times of 43.08 and 43.55, earlier in the day. Heidrich led pretty much from start to finish to set a new NIC record and nearly improve upon his CBU record of 42.91, Leahy put in a strong final 25 yards to touch out Indiana's Thomas Vanderbrook (43.63) for second place.
"There were a lot of good records set tonight by the men," Rowland said. "Heidrich had a great night and a great week to be named Swimmer of the Meet. He got votes from the coaches, his teammates and even other teams to get that award."
Scott Tolman cruised to a two-plus second win in the 200 breaststroke, as he won his signature event in 1:53.96, which proved to be a record three times over. It also was good for a new CBU (1:54.28), meet and pool record for the junior. Sean Foster gave the Lancers two top-eight finishers in the event, with a seventh-place swim (1:58.88).
"One of the top swims of the meet was Tolman in the 200 breast," Rowland said. "That time would score in the Division I meet, and he would have been invited to the D-I Championships if we were eligible this year and he would have scored -- that's pretty cool."
Schuster and Justin Quiroga both scored in the 100 individual medley for CBU by taking eighth and 17th in 50.94 and 51.57, respectively. Moseley put up more points for the Lancers in the 200 backstroke when he logged a personal-best time to take 11th in 1:45.47. Colton Babcock ended his season when took 31st in the 100 free (45.91).
