SMYRNA, Del. – Four All-American finishes, including a championship run from Zach Schrader, ended California Baptist University's debut NCAA Division I season with a bang at the 2019 National Collegiate Open.
Schrader won the tournament title at heavyweight, while Daxton Gordon secured a runner-up finish at 149 pounds to end his collegiate career. Garrett Strang took fourth at 184 pounds and CBU redshirt Evan Bockman took sixth place at 174.
The National Collegiate Open is in its 11th year and was hosted at Smyrna High. It's an open championship designed to give a national tournament experience for redshirts, backups or other Division I wrestlers ineligible for the NCAA Championships. The Lancers went head-to-head with wrestlers from Virginia, North Carolina, NC State, Navy, Army, Minnesota, Harvard, Stanford, Arizona State, Wyoming and Nebraska just to name a few.
Schrader won four of his five matches by decision. He opened with a narrow win over Colin Lawler of NC State (3-2), pinned Davenport's Joe Markham before getting two more decisions on Lock Haven's Isaac Reid (3-2) and Zach Knighton-Ward of Hofstra (6-3) to advance to the finals. A 3-1 victory against North Carolina's Keaton Kluever secured the championship for Schrader.
Gordon won his first three matches by bonus points, opening with back-to-back major decisions over Nathan Smith of Pittsburg-Johnstown (9-1) and Duke's Eric Carter (13-3) before pinning Army's PJ Ogunsanya to advance to the finals. It was a battle for the title, but Minnesota's Brayton Lee just pulled out the 9-7 decision.
At 197, Strang opened the tournament with a 9-6 win over Edwin Morales before suffering a 12-3 loss to Jonathan Lowe. Strang rebounded with three-straight wins to secure himself a top-four finish.
Strang posted a 15-0 technical fall in his first consolation match with Keegan Ryan and then moved into the third-place match with decisions over Columbia's Joe Franzese (4-3) and Virginia's Michael Battista (7-6). A rematch with Lowe was the third-place match, and Lowe came away the victor again.
Bockman recorded one of the quickest pins in program history to start his day, putting Maryland's Jacob Nielson's shoulders to the mat in just 19 seconds. He advanced with a 10-4 win over Forest Bell of Princeton before suffering an 8-4 loss to UNC's Clay Lautt in the semifinals and eventually take sixth after two more losses in the consolation bracket.
A total of 13 Lancers attended the 11th annual National Collegiate Open. Vincent Zavala (133), Adam Velasquez (141), Jaron Pagaduan (157), Jacob Cooper (165), Bryce Buckley (174), Arick Lopez (197), Frank Wyshinski (197), Ali'i Loyola (197) and Brayden Ray (285).
Ray went 3-2 in the open, while Zavala and Lopez had two wins each. Loyola, Cooper and Wyshinski won one match, as well.
