OREM, Utah – A pair of top-five finishes from Timothy Legemet ended California Baptist University's first-ever Western Athletic Conference Championships on a high note.
Legemet secured a third-place finish in the 1,500 meter and took fifth in the 5,000 meter on Saturday at Utah Valley. Simon Bedard another podium performance by taking sixth in the 5K for the Lancers, as well.
Despite not fielding a full team, CBU finished seventh out of eight teams in the WAC with a total of 27 points. Legemet and Bedard combined to score 13 of those points Saturday.
A solid race secured Legemet all-conference honors in his first-ever WAC race, the 1,500, to start his day. He started out in the middle of the pack about one lap in, but steadily climbed up and gave himself a good chance to win by pulling into top-two position with one lap to go. The freshman finished in three minutes, 55.55 seconds overall.
Legemet and Bedard overcame whatever fatigue they may have felt when he ran the 5K just a few minutes later. They finished back-to-back, with Legemet taking fifth in 15:26.36 and Bedard coming in sixth in 15:32.55.
The Lancers were showcased their depth in the 5,000, with four other runners taking part in the event. McMarshall Hartzenberg took ninth (15:46.12), while Zlatko Kozuhar (15:49.74), Dennis Messmer (16:14.38) and Hector Peralta (16:26.96) came in 11th, 14th and 17th, respectively.
Cody Beeson added a top-four finish in his 1500 heat, with a time of 4:05.49 that was good for 13th overall for the Lancers. Simon Bedard, who won the WAC's 10K title on Friday, finished 19th overall (4:22.47) in the race, as well.
