RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Given how successful last year was, California Baptist University has decided to run it back, as Head Coach Adam Tribble revealed with the announcement of the 2019 cross country schedule on Wednesday.
The 2019 slate will include familiar venues and competition, as CBU is scheduled to attend the same six events as last year. The Lancers will spend the majority of the season close to home, with three Southern California meets on the docket, including two in Riverside. CBU will also take two out-of-state trips to prestigious events at the University of Minnesota and Texas A&M.
"We're very blessed to have the administrative support and resources to put together a top-notch schedule," Tribble said. "With the returnees and newcomers joining us this fall, we feel this should be a great season for CBU cross country."
CBU kicks off the 2019 season with a trip to Cal State Fullerton for the Mark Covert Classic at Brea's Carbon Canyon Regional Park on Aug. 31. Two weeks later, the Lancers will run the UC Riverside Invitational at UCR's Agricultural Operations (Ag/Ops) Course. Last season, the women's team posted second-place finishes, while the men's team placed fifth in both meets.
The Lancers wrap up the month of September with a trip to Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational, one of the largest cross country meets in the nation, with six collegiate races and four high school races set to take place on Sept. 28. The Roy Griak Invitational takes place on the Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. and hosts some of the best cross country teams in the nation. CBU will look to further its case as one of the top teams in the country following second and eighth-place finishes by the women and men, respectively, in 2018.
CBU will only have one race day in October, competing with a split-squad between the UCR Highlander Invitational and Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 19. Last season, the men won the UCR Highlander Invitational, while the women took fifth in a star-studded field in College Station.
The Lancers conclude the 2019 schedule with a trip to Kansas City for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship at Swope Park on Nov. 2. The women's team will be looking to successfully defend their WAC title, while the men will look to make their way to the top of the podium as well.
Although the collegiate season will end after the WAC Championship for CBU, several Lancers will have an opportunity to test themselves at the 2019 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Portugal on Dec. 8.
