RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the fifth year in a row, California Baptist University earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Team Academic Award in 2018-19. This season marked the first time the Lancers received the distinction in NCAA Division I.
It finishes an impressive debut in Division I and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). CBU logged a 21-11 record, took fourth place in the WAC standings and earned a berth to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) and won its postseason opener.
The Lancers maintained an impressive 3.476 grade-point average as a team, while six individuals: Summer Avery, Elizabeth Gilley, Sydney Marks, Tesa Oaks Ellie Voss and Natalie Zimmerer earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honors this year.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. A total of 189 Division I teams received the award this season.
CBU begins the 2019 season at the Idaho Volleyball Classic at the end of August. The first match of the year is against the University of Illinois at Chicago at 10 a.m. on Aug. 30th. The Lancers make their home debut with a WAC match versus The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 5.
