RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker announced the NCAA Strategic Vision and Planning Committee voted to advance the Lancers to year two of the reclassification process to NCAA Division I on Monday.
The Lancers just completed an impressive first year in NCAA Division I in 2018-19. They're now cleared to begin the second of four transition seasons to full D-I membership.
"I'm so proud of the way our student-athletes competed in our first year of D-I competition. They proved what we've known all along, that they were D-I caliber athletes," Dr. Parker said. "Our coaches and staff took on the challenge and prepared our student-athletes for success. The Inland Empire is starting to take notice and has begun to support our teams at record levels."
Across all 20 sports, CBU logged an above .500 overall record in head-to-head competition in 2018-19. Five Lancer teams: volleyball, men's and women's basketball and swim/dive qualified for postseason tournaments involving all Division I schools. Both basketball teams hosted first-round postseason tournament games, while both water polo teams ended the year ranked in the top-25 of the NCAA (men 16th, women 25th).
At the conference level, nine teams secured top-five finishes in the regular season. Women's cross country and baseball both won Western Athletic Conference titles.
It moves CBU's total to 73 conference championships in its history, with 45 of them coming since it began its transition to NCAA in 2011-12. Academically, the Lancers maintained their high standard and achieved a new all-time high department grade-point average of 3.355.
"It is an honor to be a part of this exciting transition for CBU and our athletic department," Assistant Athletic Director for Academic and Student Support and Senior Woman Administrator Rachel Keys said. "It is rewarding to see the hard work of our staff, student-athletes, and entire campus community pay off as we hit this milestone and prepare for the next phase of our journey. I look forward to what we can accomplish in year two."
The Lancers enjoyed an impressive run in NCAA Division II and the PacWest from 2012-18. CBU left Division II and the PacWest in just about the best way possible. In 2017-18, the Lancers won the D-II Learfield Directors' Cup (after a runner-up finish in 2017) and the PacWest Commissioner's Cup for the sixth time and fifth year in a row.
