INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The California Baptist men's soccer team traveled to Indiana on Friday to kick off its season opener against IUPUI. The game ended in a tie after the Lancers scored in the final 12 seconds of the game.
"Opening day is often very difficult and hard-fought, and today certainly was," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "IUPUI was organized, and they defended very well and very tough throughout all 90 minutes. The reality is we needed a bit more precision with our combination play to really make our possessions count."
The Lancers opened the game on the defensive side of things, as the Jaguars were able to put up two early shots. CBU keeper Albert Escuin was in prime form in the opening minutes, directing traffic with his backline and keeping the Jaguars off the board.
Both teams went into the break even at 0-0. Escuin ended the half with four saves, as CBU outshot the Jaguars, 6-4, but were unsuccessful in putting quality shots on frame.

In the second half, the Jaguars were able to break through with a goal in the 55th minute. Yan Souza scored on a double assist that put IUPUI up 1-0.
The Lancers started to mount an attack that would last for the remainder of the game, as CBU ended regulation outshooting the Jaguars, 9-4, in the second half.
Tete Vacas was the hero the Lancers needed in the final minute, as Linus Mansson and Daniel Simonsen were able to put Vacas in a good position off a corner kick.
The ball bounced around in IUPUI's box before falling to Vacas, who flicked it into the far corner of the net with 12 seconds left on the scoreboard to force overtime.

CBU was able to get two shots off on both sides of overtime, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 1-1 tie.
"What is most important is that we take something from this game and apply what we've learned to our next game," added Michaelson.
The Lancers open their season at 0-0-1 and will continue their road trip with a game against Purdue – Fort Wayne on Sunday at 10 a.m. (PST).
