
Lancers Sweep Day One at Lion Up Classic

HAMMOND, La. – Scrappy defensive play and strong serving led California Baptist University to wins in both matches of Friday's doubleheader at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Up Classic.
The Lancers opened the day with a sweep of Jackson State (25-14, 25-12, 25-16) and ended it with a four-set win over host SLU (25-21, 25-27, 25-16, 25-20). CBU notched 16 aces on the day, with eight in both matches, and held its opponents to a sub .160 hitting percentage.

Paige Johnstone tallied seven aces on the day and helped the Lancers post an 8-1 advantage in aces over Jackson State. The true freshman tallied five aces in the match, which is tied for the third-most in CBU's NCAA-era history.

CBU's tough serves helped it hold the Tigers to a .034 hitting percentage. Megan Sester led the offense at the net with 10 kills on a .318 percentage. Nicole Abreu also picked up 13 digs in the match.
Natalie Zimmerer logged 23 assists, five kills, two kills and an ace on Jackson State while setting up Yagoda Jedrzejczak and Sydney Marks for seven kills each. Jedrzejczak also had three blocks, while Marks added seven digs.

Sester and Marks both erupted for 19 kills apiece in the day's finale over Southeastern Louisiana, with Marks hitting a .405 clip (19-4-37). CBU posted advantages of 8-3 in aces and 66-55 in digs and held the Lions to a .157 hitting percentage as a result.

Zimmerer put together an all-around match with a season-high 47 assists and 12 digs for her third double-double of the year. The senior setter also had a career-high six kills. Defensively, Abreu picked up 22 digs and Johnstone matched her career-high with 14 digs.
CBU will conclude the SLU Lion Up Classic with a match versus Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific. The Lancers improve to 3-5 on the year, while Jackson State and Southeastern Louisiana fall to 3-6 and 2-7, respectively.
