DAVIS, Calif. – California Baptist University secured its most dominant win of the season with a 19-6 victory over Austin College on Friday at the UC Davis Aggie Roundup.
Ten different Lancers scored in the win, while seven had at least two goals. Senior center Logan Mena led the way with four goals and two steals in the game, while Angel Sanchez, Nick Johnson, Hunter Barnett, Matt Diacono, Jacob Olsen and Zach Lowery all scored twice in the game.
CBU opened the game on an 11-1 run, with Mena scoring all four of his goals in just about 11 minutes, while Lowery, PJ McDonough, Johnson, Diacono, Barnett and Thomas de Wit all contributed to the hot start.
Tristan Felberg finished with eight saves and two steals over 24 minutes in the cage, while Gabe Thorne had four saves in the first quarter alone. The Lancers move to 2-6 on the year after they fell to host UC Davis, 13-6, in the first game of the day and the Western Water Polo Association season. Austin drops to 0-6, while the Aggies improve to 4-2.
McDonough had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Joseph Galgani also scored twice, drew an ejection and a steal in the game, while Lowery added two assists. Thorne had eight saves and a steal, as well.
The Aggies scored the first four goals of the game over the opening seven-and-a-half minutes. The Lancers brought themselves right back into the game with a 4-0 run of their own.
Mena got CBU on the board with 39 seconds left in the first quarter. McDonough and Kyle Johnson both scored in the second quarter to make it a 5-3 UC Davis lead at halftime. Galgani then cut the deficit down to just one goal with a goal a minute into the third quarter.
UC Davis countered with a 5-0 run to go up 10-4 with seven minutes to play. The Lancers end the Aggie Roundup with two more top-20 matchups with No. 8 Cal and 18th-ranked San Jose State on Saturday at 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., respectively. Live stats are available for both games on TheFOSH.net.
