RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hat tricks from Joseph Galgani and Riley Bumgardner led 17th-ranked California Baptist University to a 15-10 win over Concordia in its home opener on Thursday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Bumgardner and Galgani traded off big second and third quarters to guide the Lancers past the Eagles in non-conference action. Galgani scored a career-and-game high five goals, with three coming in the third quarter, while Bumgardner had himself a first-half hat trick, with back-to-back goals in the second frame.
"It was a good effort tonight," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "I liked the aggression on the counter attacker, and when we were patient in the half-court set and got the ball to our centers, we were productive."
Zach Lowery added three assists and a goal, while PJ McDonough scored twice, as well. Gabe Thorne came up with 12 saves in the cage to help CBU improve to 4-7 and drop Concordia to 2-10.
The Lancers resume Western Water Polo Association play when they host reigning conference champion, UC San Diego. The Tritons ended 2018 with a 20-6 record and ranked fifth in the country after they advanced to the NCAA Championship semifinals. UCSD is currently ranked 11th with a 7-4 record. CBU and Concordia found itself tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers then started the second period on a 5-0 run, fueled by consecutive goals from Bumgardner in 42 seconds. It led to California Baptist winning the second quarter 6-1, which gave it a 9-4 lead at halftime.
The Eagles had a response and cut their deficit all the way down 11-9 with 15 seconds left in the third. Galgani kept the Lancers in the game, scoring four-straight goals for his team, including one with a second left in the third to give CBU a 12-9 edge going into the fourth quarter.
California Baptist closed out the game on a 4-1 run, with fourth-quarter goals from Lowery, Galgani, and Britton sealing the victory.
"We had a small lapse of defensive intensity in the third quarter," Rosa said. "We need to stay consistent through the whole game without that lapse."
