Lancers Secure First Victory Over Fairfield

MALIBU, Calif. — Defense and an impressive fifth set guided California Baptist University to its first victory of the season against Fairfield at the Pepperdine Tournament on Friday.
The Lancers won their first two sets and then the fifth for a wild win (25-17, 25-22, 17-25, 18-25, 15-11) over Fairfield (2-2) on Friday morning to start the Pepperdine Tournament. CBU held the Stags to just a .135 hitting percentage (55 kills, 30 errors on 185 attacks) with great team defense.
CBU then faced off with a Power Five opponent, Texas A&M of the Southeastern Conference, with the Aggies coming away with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-19 win.
Against Fairfield, Dennison notched her first collegiate double-double on a career-high 19 kills and 18 digs to help CBU defeat the Stags.
Setters Natalie Zimmerer (27 assists, 13 digs, two aces) and Hana Okuhara (15 assists, 12 digs) both recorded double-doubles, as well.
Nicole Abreu led the defense with a team-high 24 digs and also had five assists. Sydney Marks put down a career-high 16 kills on a .302 percentage (16-3-43) with five digs and two blocks. Freshman Christine Graf added 10 kills, which marked the fourth time this season she's posted double-digit kills.
Fairfield held an early 4-2 lead in the fifth and final set. The Lancers took back momentum and grabbed an 8-5 lead with a 6-1 run fueled by two kills from Yagoda Jedrzejczak, one from Marks and a Zimmerer ace.
The Stags took back the lead, 10-9, with a 5-2 run. CBU then closed out the match on a 6-1 charge, with three kills from Marks being crucial in putting CBU over the top.
The Aggies went 17-13 last season, and are an accomplished program with 24 NCAA Tournament appearances in their history, including a six-year run from 2011-16. Texas A&M improved to 2-1 on the year, while Fairfield dropped to 2-2 and CBU to 1-5.
Graf led CBU with nine kills on a .333 percentage (9-1-24) against the Aggies, while Zimmerer logged 23 assists, three digs and two kills. Dennison added eight kills and three digs versus the Aggies. Chandler Gorman made her first appearance for the Lancers and finished with three blocks and a kill in the match.
CBU has a week off before returning to match action at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Up Classic on Sept. 13-14. The Lancers will face Jackson State, the host Lions and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in the tournament.
