Lancers Unable to Ground Golden Eagles In Weekend Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist men's soccer hosted the Golden Eagles from Oral Roberts University on Sunday afternoon, dropping their second home game of the weekend, this time by a score of 1-0.
The first half saw both teams trading significant chances, with each keeper forced to make four saves before heading into the locker rooms.
On top of the multitude of saves, Lancer points leader Tete Vacas sent a pair of menacing headers towards the net, but the first curled just wide right, while the second was met by the crossbar which sent it over and out for a ORU goal kick.
Though the Lancers had released 10 shots in the half, the two teams retired for halftime scoreless.
The Lancers came out controlling the second half, ripping off four shots within two-and-a-half minutes of the starting horn, one that nearly snuck into the bottom right corner of the net, only to be booted away at the last second with a kick save from the ORU goalie.
Overall a very balanced game, it was broken open nearly 15 minutes into the second half, when a missed clearance inside the CBU box was recovered by an opportunistic Golden Eagle, who sent a soft cross in front of the Lancer's net that would find the foot of a teammate for a far post tap in.
CBU would manage to get just four more shots off in the half after the ORU goal, but were ultimately unable to obtain the equalizer.
"Unfortunately today was a bad combination of missed opportunities and a defensive mistake. There are some guys on both ends of the field who will want a key moment or two back, moments that should have changed the game, but that's why it's a team game," head coach Coe Michaelson said. "No individual can take complete responsibility for the loss. It's all of us. ORU is a good team and when the margins are slim, those key moments make or break the result. So we learn, keep our heads up, and go get the next one."
The Lancers will travel to Pennsylvania this coming week to take on a pair of opponents never before faced. They will play both games in Pittsburgh first facing off with the Colonials of Robert Morris on Thursday, Sept. 12, followed by the Dukes of Duquesne University on Sunday, Sept. 15. The games will be played at 1:00 pm PDT and 9:00 am PDT respectively.
