CORVALLIS – AJ Raya won his 19th match of the season, while Jacob Cooper also emerged victorious in California Baptist University's second-to-last dual of the season at Oregon State, a Power 5 and Pac-12 Conference opponent, on Friday.
Coach Lennie Zalesky went head-to-head with his brother and Beavers' Coach Jim Zalesky, with OSU grabbing a 28-6 win at Gill Coliseum. Raya's 19th win tied him with Zach Schrader for the team lead in victories this season, which is also the program record for wins in a single season of the NCAA Division I era.
Raya overcame Lane Stigall in the 149-pound showdown on an 8-4 decision. Two first-period takedowns staked Raya to a 4-1 lead going into the second period. He tacked on his third takedown in the final minute of the match to wrap up the four-point decision.
Cooper tallied CBU's second win of the evening with a 5-2 decision victory at 174 pounds. The senior scored some big back points in the first period to propel him to the win against Jackson McKinney.
The final three matches of the night were close contests, with all three being decided by two or fewer points. The night's final match went to an overtime period, with heavyweight Zach Schrader suffering his first dual loss of the season against Jamarcus Grant.
Dilan Atjun, Christian Nunez and Adam Velasquez opened the night with top competition, each facing a ranked opponent in their respective weight classes. Oregon State improves to 6-6 in dual matches this season, while CBU moves to 3-9. The Lancers regular-season finale comes in the form of a dual at CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. CBU will conclude the year at the National Collegiate Open on March 1.
