COLORADO SPRINGS – Evan Honer secured the biggest victory of his young career when he won the one-meter board title for California Baptist University at the Air Force Diving Invitational on Friday.
The true freshman earned himself the No. 1 spot in the 1-meter board prelims with a score of 322.20 on his first six dives. Honer received an automatic qualifier for the semifinals where went on to take first again, and then won out again in the finals.
"Evan never wavered today, and he was extremely consistent with his 1-meter list. He started out of the gates with a 60-point dive to take the lead and he never looked back," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said.
CBU finds itself against top divers from all over the country this week, including Wyoming, Utah, BYU, New Mexico, Denver, Colorado State and Air Force. The Falcons are running an elimination format to determine the winner on both boards.
The top-12 competed in group stages until the field was brought down to the final two. Honer won out in all three stages to be crowned the champion.
The Lancers will dive on the platform on Saturday before returning home to prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Championships (Feb. 26-29).
The top-12 divers on the 3-meter board advanced to the elimination round, and the Lancers' women were very close to having multiple qualifiers. Madeline Wiese and Kiree Lowe took 13th and 14th with scores of 255 and 247.90, respectively.
Savannah Uhlir was not far off, either, as her score of 246 was good for 16th. Madison Liu came in 32nd (204.55).
"We had some terrific performances on the women's side," Couto said. "Madeline led the way just missing the top-2 by a couple of points, followed closely by Kiree and Savannah."
Zane Freeman and Tyler Stevens both secured top-20 finishes on 1-meter. Freeman took 15th with a 252.35 and Stevens came in 19th with a 219.50.
