Lancers Battle Lopes in Phoenix
2/8/2020 3:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHOENIX – California Baptist women's basketball led Grand Canyon on the road for three-and-a-half quarters in a close conference battle. CBU held off the Grand Canyon rally in the third quarter, but fell to the Lopes in the end, 72-66.
Senior Lexy Ram and junior Georgia Dale each recorded a double-double in the game, the first time teammates have done that in the same game this season. Ram finished the game as the Lancers' leading scorer and rebounder with 15 and 12, respectively, with Dale right behind her with 13 and 11.
Two more Lancers scored in double-digits as Ane Olaeta scored 14 points to go with eight assists, and Sydney Palma threw in 10 points.
The Lancers went into the half up by seven. A big part of that came by shooting 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field while holding GCU to just 8.3 percent (1-12) from beyond the arc.
After the break, CBU led by as much as nine in the third quarter, but the Lopes used a 9-3 run to end the period and cut the Lancer lead to just one.
The home team would shoot 4-5 from behind the three-point line and drain 10-12 free throws to close out the game in the fourth. CBU won the rebounding war 46-34, but the Lopes used 34 bench points to balance the scales.
The Lancers now sit at 11-13 overall and 3-7 in the WAC as they enter into a conference bye-week. CBU will host Westcliff on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the CBU Events Center as the first leg of a rare double-header with the men playing Westcliff immediately following.
