SAN LUIS OBISPO – For perhaps the last time, California Baptist University and Stanford wrestling faced off on Thursday afternoon at Cal Poly's Mott Athletics Center.
The Lancers got wins from Zach Schrader, Caden Gerlach and Christian Nunez in the dual, which ended in a 24-12 victory for the No. 21 ranked Cardinal. Stanford went 11-4, finished runner-up in the Pac-12 and saw five wrestlers earn NCAA berths last season.
Schrader brought his record to 4-1 this season with a 9-5 decision victory at heavyweight. He took a 4-2 lead on Stanford's Seamus O'Malley in the first period and held a 6-4 edge through the first five minutes. He closed out strong, with a 3-1 edge in the third period.
Gerlach continued his impressive start to his collegiate career, as the redshirt freshman won his second-straight match on a first-period pin in just 66 seconds at 184 pounds.
The Lancers' Christian Nunez got his first dual start of the season and made it count, with a 3-1 decision at 133 pounds, after he took a 2-0 lead in the opening period.
Stanford improves to 2-0 on the year, while CBU drops to 0-4. It was the 11th meeting between these two in CBU's 13-year history, and possibly the final chapter, as the Cardinal have announced plans to cut the program at the end of the 2021 season.
RANKINGS
Schrader continued to build on his resume with his fourth win of the season on Thursday. He became the first Lancer in program history to earn a top-25 ranking in NCAA Division I when FloWrestling tabbed him at No. 25 out of all heavyweights.
Thursday's win brings Schrader's career record to 66-30-1, which ranks him ninth in CBU history for all-time wins. His 44 wins over the last three years are a record for the Lancers in the NCAA Division I era.
Stanford entered the week not only ranked No. 21 in all of NCAA Division I, but with two ranked wrestlers, as well. Jaden Abas and Requir Van der Merwe came in ranked No. 15 and No. 16 at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.
CBU's AJ Raya continued an extremely challenging run of opponents, as he battled Abas in an 8-4 decision loss.
EXTRA, EXTRA
The Lancers wrestled seven other countable matches against Stanford and Cal Poly on Thursday. Dilan Ajtun (125) came away with a first-period pin for his first victory of the season. Zachary Rowe won his first match of the season, too, with a sudden-death victory over the Mustang's Max Anderson, 6-4.
