RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University Athletics continued its trend of academic success in the fall of 2020, as the Lancers posted a department grade-point average of 3.452.
It is the second-best semester GPA for the department over the last six years and is not far off the record of 3.475, which was set in the spring of 2020. Eighteen of 19 CBU teams logged a GPA of at least 3.24, and seven maintained GPAs above 3.5.
"Our student-athletes at California Baptist University continue to amaze me with their drive to excel in the classroom and on the surface of competition," CBU Interim Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman said. "This is reflected in the tremendous achievement in the classroom for the fall of 2020. There is a lot to be proud of at CBU and in Lancer Athletics, and the commitment of our student-athletes to academic and athletic excellence is near the top of the list."
It keeps the Lancers in position to improve their academic-year GPA record for the third season in a row and seventh time in the last eight seasons. The current record of 3.445 from 2019-20 was up from the previous best of 3.355 in 2018-19.
Women's cross country/track posted the top GPA in the department with a 3.68, while women's swimming and diving and women's golf followed with 3.67 GPAs.
The men's teams were also led by cross country/track with a 3.52. Water Polo (3.49) and men's swimming (3.44) completed the top-three on the men's side.
"I am very proud to see our student-athletes compete with excellence for another strong semester during the COVID pandemic," said Rachel Keys, CBU's Assistant Athletic Director for Academic and Student Support and Senior Woman Administrator. "We have seen a lot of changes over the past nine months, but one thing that has remained true is our student-athletes commitment and outstanding performance with their academics."
It comes during one of the most challenging seasons to date. The university is in the middle of its third season in NCAA Division I and has continued remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
