TALLAHASSEE – California Baptist University cross country took on its greatest challenge of the season at the Florida State Invitational/NCAA Pre-Nationals Meet on Friday. It led to strong finishes on both sides and a new program record.
Florian Le Pallec set the Lancers' 8,000-meter record for the men with a time of 23 minutes, 29.1 seconds as the Lancers battled through the most talented fields they've seen this season on both the men's and women's side at Apalachee Regional Park.
A total of 15 teams receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division I Top-30 Poll, including 12 ranked squads were in attendance on the men's side, and there were 16 teams receiving votes and 10 ranked teams in the women's field.
CBU's men took 14th place overall with 376 points. They finished in front of three top-30 ranked teams in the process: No. 17 Wake Forest (401), No. 25 Weber State (454) and No. 30 Charlotte (496). The Lancers' women placed 19th (492) in front of a UC Davis squad (496) receiving votes in Division I and Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Valley.
The men's field was led by top-ranked Northern Arizona (64), while seventh-ranked Colorado and No. 8 Arkansas tied for second with 128 points. Fifth-ranked BYU (131) and No. 2 Notre Dame (203) rounded out the top five.
Fifth-ranked Colorado dominated for the women (54), as No. 10 Utah finished runner-up (149). Fifteenth-ranked Florida State (163), No. 14 Ole Miss (165), No. 12 North Carolina (184), No. 11 Arkansas (243) and No. 16 Northern Arizona (279) completed the top seven.

Balabanov was CBU's second finisher in 23:56.3, which placed him 61st overall. It was a top-seven time in program history, as he now owns five of the Lancers' top-eight 8K times ever.
Said Mechaal and Giedrius Valincius took 72nd and 75th with times of 24:03.1 and 24:04.2, respectively. They were the 10th and 11th best times for CBU all-time. Rikus Van Niekerk was the Lancers' final scorer in 24:34.2.
