Three Lancers Score In Come-From-Behind Win Against Dixie State

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University men's soccer took on Dixie State to wrap up a three-game home series. The Lancers emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle, downing the Trailblazers 3-2 to reach 8-2-3 on the season and 3-1-2 in conference play. This is the second victory over DSU this season as the Lancers played the Blazers in the season opener on August 29, winning in St. George 2-0.
"Today was not our best performance, but some of that was Dixie's gameplan and execution. They posed us some real problems and really competed hard. I think a lot of credit goes to some of our guys off the bench today. Matthew Warbick and Leo Mendez both came up big on a day that some others perhaps didn't have their best stuff," Head Coach Coe Michaelson said of the win. "It's a great reminder of the importance of working hard every day and staying ready. I feel that the decisive factor was the difference in what both teams got from their bench. In the end, top teams find a way to win when they aren't at their best and we did that today."
The all-time series leans heavily in CBU's favor as the Lancers now hold an 8-2-1 record against Dixie State and remain unbeaten at home in the series with a 5-0-1 record when the Trailblazers come to Riverside.
The two sides were evenly matched in the first half, trading possession and shots nearly one-for-one in the opening 45 minutes. Dixie State would strike first in the 30th minute, but as the clock ticked down, the Lancers continued their attack. In the 40th minute, Jordan Lane sent a free kick into the box that would eventually find Matthew Warbrick for his first goal as a Lancer, leveling the game heading into halftime.
The second half leaned statistically in favor of the Lancers in terms of offensive chances, with CBU outshooting DSU 13-6. However, the Trailblazers would convert a penalty kick in the 55th minute to take back their short-lived lead from the first half.
The Lancers would earn a penalty kick of their own in the 64th minute, which allowed Luis Mueller to secure his second goal of the year, evening the game again, this time at two goals each.
Dixie State would not go down without a fight though, and in the 80th minute it seemed like it might have found a third goal as the Trailblazer who had scored their earlier brace, found himself streaking down the field with just goalkeeper Gage Rogers to beat. Rogers was equal to the challenge, making a magnificent save when his team needed it most.
That energy from that save translated to the offensive push CBU would soon make, and just four minutes later, Leo Mendez would lift a perfectly timed shot over a charging Trailblazer keeper for his second career game-winning goal for CBU.
Tete Vacas would lead the Lancers with four shots, but Warbrick was on point all day, putting all three of his shots on frame, scoring once. Rogers would finish the game with eight total saves, none more important or spectacular than the game-saving 80th minute stop.
