RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University is set for a full season of Lancer softball with a nearly even split of home and away contests. CBU is slated to host 27 of the 56 games on its upcoming schedule, including back-to-back weekends of home tournament play in March.
On the formidable schedule ahead of CBU, Head Coach Mike Smith said, "We are excited to get things started with this successful and established program, great players and unbelievable staff. To be the best you have to play the best; that has always been my philosophy when putting together a schedule, and it is been part of the recipe for success in programs past".
February will see the Lancers fully commit to the road as all 15 scheduled contests will be played away from CBU. Three tournaments and a single game on the campus of UC Riverside will challenge the Lancers early.
High-level tournament play will test CBU's abilities beginning Feb. 10-12, with a five-game stretch to open the season at Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic. CBU is committed to taking on the likes of Arizona State, Duke and Oklahoma State among others on opening weekend in Phoenix.
The Lancers continue tournament play by traveling to San Diego from Feb. 18-20 to compete in San Diego State's Campbell Cartier Classic. That will be followed up with the Mary Nutter Classic from Feb. 24-26 in Cathedral City. CBU will face more top-tier talent in SDSU, Arizona, Texas Tech and more as it closes out the season-opening road marathon.
March will see a complete flip of the Lancers' script, as they will play 14-straight home contests between March 2-13. Highlighting this home stand is back-to-back weekends of host duties as CBU and crosstown foe UC Riverside join forces and facilities to co-host the Amy S. Harrison Classic (March 4-6) and the UCR/CBU Classic (March 11-13).
The Lancers will host 19 total games, which includes neutral-site contests, in a softball fan's dream scenario at John C. Funk Stadium. The Lancers will face a collection of first-time opponents during this stretch, including Oregon State, North Dakota, North Dakota State and Columbia.
As tournament season ends, Western Athletic Conference play will begin. In a change of form, the WAC will break into divisions after the recent additions of several Texas schools. CBU will play within the West Division that is comprised of Seattle U, Grand Canyon, NM State, Utah Valley and Dixie State.
The Lancers are scheduled to play eight divisional series, four on the road and four within the friendly confines of Funk Stadium. CBU will travel to Seattle U (March 18-19) to open league play, while also planning trips to Grand Canyon (April 1-2), Utah Valley (April 15-16) and New Mexico State (April 29-30).
CBU will host three of those same four teams and welcome former PacWest foe Dixie State (April 8-9) to Riverside as well. Full conference home play consists of tilts with NM State (March 25-26), Seattle U (April 22-23) and ends with rival Grand Canyon (May 6-7) as the Senior Weekend opponent.
California Baptist will also play exciting one-off games against quality Southern California opponents, with road games at Long Beach State (March 15) and Loyola Marymount (March 22) and a home contest versus Cal State Fullerton (April 12).
Smith added, "It should never get easier, we shouldn't ever settle for being average and need to focus on getting better each day. We will be battle-tested early to be ready for WAC play."
