IRVINE -- California Baptist University men's soccer opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 110-minute draw Wednesday night against The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The tie moves CBU to 1-0-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the WAC, while the Vaqueros followed up their WAC opening upset of no. 15 Seattle with this stalemate to move to 1-0-1 overall and in conference.
Though neither team managed to secure a goal, they had plenty of chances as they combined for 25 shots and 10 on goal. The Lancers had a pair of shots glance off the woodwork just missing the angle to bounce in, the best of which was a chance that came in the 62nd minute when Bryan Iliohan connected on a header inside the six-yard box that was just inches too high, banging off the crossbar.
The Vaqueros' most promising sequence came late in the first half when they rattled off three shots, two of which required CBU senior goalkeeper Gage Rogers to save two of them before the third flew just over the crossbar.
"I thought we were unfortunate not to score and had a lot of control for large parts of both the first half and second, but late in both halves they posed some problems with a few very dangerous attackers," Head Coach Coe Michaelson said.
The rare night game for CBU came with added issues, as cramping plague both teams towards the end of the cold, damp game.
"Today was also an example of why you always stay ready to compete, with several guys getting opportunities, as we ended up in a next-man-up situation over and over again it seemed," Michaelson said. "Given that adversity, I'm proud of the guys for fighting to the end. That could be an important point in the final tally."
The Lancers will regroup in Riverside for a few days before heading to Texas for their first road conference match, taking on the Huskies of Houston Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 12 p.m.
