RIVERSIDE --- The Lancers (5-1-1) have one final test outside the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) awaiting them, as bragging rights are on the line Friday night in the Crosstown Showdown. CBU will make the short drive to UC Riverside as the Lancers and Highlanders square off one final time before their rivalry grows as conference foes in 2026.
CBU is coming off one of the most significant regular-season victories in program history on Monday when the Lancers shut out No. 20 UC Irvine. The win was the program's first-ever victory over a Division I-ranked program.
The Highlanders (2-3-2) enter Friday night following a 1-1 draw with Loyola Marymount on Monday night.
CBU garnered respect both regionally and nationally after their win on Monday night. Junior Hugo Do Rego was named the WAC Goalkeeper of the Week, the fifth of his career, after 13 saves and one goal allowed in the Lancers' previous two matches. Sophomore Blake D'Agostino was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week.
D'Agostino has been on an offensive run as of late, scoring in six consecutive matches.
The Lancers also gained national recognition with the release of the latest United Soccer Coaches' Poll. CBU is receiving votes for the second time this season.
Junior Felix Ezekwuka has also been a thorn in the side of defenders as of late. Ezekwuka netted his first CBU goal in the Lancers' 3-1 victory against Tulsa. He also assisted a goal scored by Alexander Cruz. On Monday night, Ezekwuka drew a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty goal from D'Agostino.
Freshman Liam Jones also recorded an assist in the UC Irvine victory.
The Highlanders are led offensively by Edward Castro with a pair of goals and assists. Jackson D'Alessandro also has a pair of assists this season. Goalkeeper Andrew Hermosillo is allowing 1.43 goals per match with a .737 save percentage through seven starts.
Friday night's kickoff from the UCR Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Following the Crosstown Showdown on Friday, CBU will shift its focus to conference soccer as the WAC season will begin on October 4 with a visit to San Jose State. The Lancers will be back on their home pitch on October 9 when UNLV visits Riverside.
