VB Preview: CBU Adds Non-Conference Home Match Versus La Sierra

RIVERSIDE – After closing out home Western Athletic Conference play last week, California Baptist University volleyball has scheduled a home non-conference match against a crosstown opponent, La Sierra, for Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
The Lancers will look for their sixth win of the season, as they come in a 5-8 overall record. The Eagles are currently 3-3 this season, coming off a road loss at Vanguard on Saturday.
CBU has won all three matches in its series with La Sierra via sweeps. The two last met in 2018, with the Lancers sweeping the match (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) and previously faced each other in 2005 and 2003, with the last two matches coming in the Van Dyne Gym.
ON THE ATTACK
It's no secret Calissa Hoye is a focal point of CBU's offense. The senior transfer from the University of Iowa leads the Lancers in kills with 149 overall and 3.63 a set. It gives her 48 more kills than the next teammate. She has now reached double-digit kills eight times and has two 20-kill performances on the year. Hoye is a full-rotation player for the Lancers and has five double-doubles so far this season, with 83 digs (2.02 a set).
STRONG IN THE MIDDLE
Ellie Voss is putting together a strong run of play for the Lancers. The middle blocker has at least six kills and three blocks in four of the last five matches. The junior posted at least six kills and five blocks in both matches at UTRGV two weeks and had eight kills in both matches against Grand Canyon last week, including four blocks in the series opener. On the year, Voss has 78 kills (1.70 a set) on a team-high .281 hitting percentage (78-24-192). She also leads CBU with 34 blocks (0.74), with seven solo stuffs.
WELCOME THE NEW LIBERO
Sophomore Paige Johnstone has shined in her debut season at libero. She leads the Lancers with 188 digs for a 4.27 per set average. The Murrieta native also has a team-high 16 aces and ranks third with 44 assists. She has double-digit digs in 11 of 13 matches, nine matches with 14 or more and three 20-dig performances. Her season-high of 24 digs came at Tarleton State on Feb. 2.

The Eagles are a member of the NAIA and California Pacific Conference. Overall, La Sierra averages 11.29 kills and 1.57 aces a set, while hitting .159 as a team (237-120-736) over 21 sets played to this point.
The team's strength has been on defense this year, though, as it averages 16.71 digs and 1.90 blocks per set. Both marks are improvements on their opponents' respective averages of 16.19 and 1.57.
Trinity Wyscarver and Alexa Lister are largely to thank for La Sierra's defensive play. Wyscarver ranks 17th in the NAIA with 5.95 digs per game (125 overall), while Lister is 40th with 1.05 blocks per set (22). Ramirez is the Eagels' next leading blocker with 14 blocks this year.
