
Lancers Finish Day One at Bryan Clay Invitational With Near Top-10 Times

AZUSA – California Baptist University track opened up the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday at Azusa Pacific. It was one of the busiest days of the track campaign for the Lancers, with 10 individuals running in three different events.
CBU found itself up against some of the best competition in the country, against runners from UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Long Beach, UC Riverside, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Pacific, San Diego and more.
The Lancers nearly clocked new top-10 times in program history in the men's 5,000 meter. Ivo Balabanov and Manuel Peris Bruno finished back-to-back in 14 minutes, 84.44 seconds, which was just off a top-10 time and good for 26th place overall. Manuel Peris Bruno finished one spot behind Balabnov in 14:20.86. Cameron Hylton ran a 15:08.21 in his heat for a 61st-place finish. Simon Bedard's time of 14:18.22 from 2018 rounds out CBU's top-10.
Emilia Mikszuta provided the highlight of the day on the women's side with a top-10 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The true freshman took ninth place overall in 10 minutes, 49.67 seconds.
Anneken Viljoen added a top-20 run in the 800 meter with a time of 2:14.04. Paige Haynes was CBU's standout in the women's 5K, as she was the early leader in her heat and went on to take 23rd overall in 17:38.26. Rachel Gee took 28th (17:46.61) and Helen Pacurariu-Nagy came in 41st (18:04.44).
CBU will be back at APU for the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday. Ten Lancers are set to run in the 1500 meter, which is scheduled to begin right before 8 p.m. There are two regular-season events left on CBU's schedule, the UC Riverside Invitational and West Coast Relays on April 29 and April 30, respectively.
