Lancers Crush Two Home Runs In Comeback Victory Over Utah Valley

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball got its offense going in a big way after collecting nine hits and crushing two home runs on its way to a 6-5 victory over Utah Valley in the series finale. The Lancers move to 13-21-1 on the season and are back at .500 in the Western Athletic Conference at 3-3, which is good enough for fourth place at the moment. Utah Valley returns home with a 14-17 record, 2-4 WAC.

CBU was on point defensively to open the game as starting pitcher Kerisa Viramontes struck out two in each of the first two innings. Deja Westbrook had her pitcher's back as she made a spectacular catch at the left field wall, losing the ball for a moment after bouncing off the fence, only to catch it a second time and hold onto it as she fell to the warning track.

UVU recovered to take a 3-0 lead on a double, single, double, single in the third.

Makayla Jordan put a crooked number on the board for the Lancers in the bottom of the fourth inning. She launched her first homer as a Lancer to dead center field, bringing Abby Robertson home with her to make it a 3-2 game still favoring the Wolverines.

UVU would extend its lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. That run scored with a pair of outs to mark the fifth inning this series UVU scored with two outs. CBU's bats came alive in the bottom half of the frame. The Lancers would push three singles straight up the middle, eventually scoring Ashley McBay off of a Katelyn Mangrello hit.

Amanda Argomaniz was next at the plate after Michaila Harrington came in to pinch run for Mangrello, but speed would not be a factor. Argomaniz crushed a no-doubt, three-run home run to left center to give the Lancers their first lead of the series on what proved to be the game-winning hit. CBU's first multi-homer game of the season couldn't have come at a better time.

Utah Valley would not go away quietly, scoring another run in the top of the sixth with one out to get to a 6-5 Lancer lead. The Wolverines were threatening still with a runner at second when Maile Olsen would show off her reflexes by grabbing a scorched one-out line drive and flipping it to Robertson at second to complete the inning ending double play.

Argomaniz finished the game 2-3 with a run and three runs batted in, while Robertson also had a multi-hit game going 2-3 with two runs scored. In all, seven Lancers recorded hits on the day, matching the amount that the squad had in yesterday's doubleheader.

Viramontes was dealing early and often, striking out six Wolverines while allowing four earned runs on her way to her WAC-leading ninth win of the season and her 11^th complete game on the year.

WHAT'S NEXT

CBU will play its next eight games on the road, starting with a pair against the University of San Diego in another midweek matchup. Tuesday's trip to San Diego will be a doubleheader slated for a 2 p.m. start.
