RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University has named Elroy Perkin as its new assistant wrestling coach.
"I could not be more excited for the opportunity God has put in front of me to join the CBU wrestling staff. I am looking forward to collaborating with all of the staff at CBU and getting the chance to be apart of the Lancer family," Perkin said. "A huge thank you to President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis and Director of Athletics Tyler Mariucci for taking the time to meet with me and answer all my questions. I cannot wait to get out there and begin building a strong relationship with the team and have the opportunity to help them grow as men on and off the mat."
Perkin previously served as the head assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, an NCAA Division III member, for the last six seasons. He is still a competitive wrestler in his own right and finished fifth in the 70 KG weight class at the United World Wrestling Senior Nationals this past May to earn a spot at the 2021 Senior World Team Trials.
"I believe Elroy will be a big help to our program," Coach Lennie Zalesky said. "His strengths seem to be a perfect fit for the team and our coaching staff."
In college, Perkin was a standout wrestler at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater from 2011-12 through 2014-15 under Tim Fader, who also coached with him at UW-Eau Claire. He was a four-year starter and two-time captain for the Warhawks.
Perkin qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in three-straight years (2013-15) and secured All-American honors and fifth-place finishes in 2014 and 2015. The 149-pounder also won the 2013 D-III Midwest Regional Championship and the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
"Elroy is one of the best young assistant coaches in the country," said Fader. "He loves to wrestle and train and still competes on the national level. That attitude has had a very positive impact on our college wrestlers. He is learning a lot about coaching and just as he does when he competes, he continues to improve."
