RIVERSIDE – A total of 19 California Baptist University baseball players are wrapping up summer league action across the nation.
There have been a number of standout performances from Lancers this summer, with three All-Stars, two members of championship teams and a playoff MVP. CBU was represented by three players in the Cape Cod League (CCL), eight in the Alaska Baseball League, three in the Sunset Collegiate League (SCL) and one each in the West Coast League (WCL), the SoCal Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL), Northwoods League, Mavericks League and with the Alaska Goldpanners.
The Lancers are coming off a banner season this spring. CBU won a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a total of 40 games in 2021. There's been little rest for many Lancers this summer, though.
CAPE COD LEAGUE
Chad Castillo and Drew Necochea helped the Brewster WhiteCaps to the CCL title on Wednesday. Castillo was named the CCL Playoff MVP. He batted .333 overall this year with 17 hits, 14 runs, seven RBI and 13 walks. He was even better in the postseason, as he batted .400 with six hits, two doubles, three runs batted in and three more scored in four playoff games. He went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in the Whitecaps' 10-6 victory over Bourne on Wednesday.
CJ Culpepper was impressive in the CCL with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He was named a CCL East Division All-Star in July and finished the season strong, as well. He logged four saves, a 1-0 record and 1.72 ERA with 23 strikeouts to just two walks and 10 hits allowed over 10 appearances and 15.2 innings pitched.
ALASKA LEAGUE
An overwhelming majority of nine Lancers called Alaska home this summer. A total of five of them were teammates on the Anchorage Bucs: Shayne Simpson, Ryan Delgado, Garret Ostrander, Spencer Bengard and Kyle Skipworth (an incoming transfer from Cal).
Bengard was a key arm for the Bucs. He made 14 appearances and three starts on the mound and maintained a 2.43 ERA with 43 strikeouts to just eight walks over a total of 37 innings. Skipworth batted .256 with 20 RBI, 18 walks, 16 runs and 13 doubles over 44 games.
Delgado made seven appearances and three starts on the mound with 23 strikeouts over 24.1 innings. Simpson showed some power with six of his seven hits going for extra bases. He also had seven RBI and five runs scored. Ostrander had 26 hits and walks, 24 runs, 11 RBI, five stolen bases
Liam Rocha and Alec Weigel were sharp for the Peninsula Oilers. Rocha made seven appearances and six starts. He maintained a 3.46 ERA with 42 strikeouts over 39 innings, including one complete-game effort. Weigel was dominant in relief, giving up just one earned run over five appearances out of the bullpen and 14.1 innings. He struck out 13 batters and finished up with a 0.63 ERA.
William St. Marseille led the Anchorage Glacier Pilots with 18 appearances on the mound. He logged 15 strikeouts, a win and a save and gave up just 14 hits and nine earned runs over 19.2 innings.
David Martin was a dangerous hitter for the Alaska Goldpanners, who are not a member of the ABL, this summer. He hit .308 with 37 hits, 22 walks, 21 RBI and runs scored and 10 extra-base hits over 40 games.
SUNSET COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Jacob Wilson and Ethan Pope gave the OC Legends two formidable pitchers. Pope maintained a 3.52 ERA with 18 strikeouts and just five walks in 15.1 innings over five appearances. Wilson logged two wins, two quality starts, a 4.29 ERA and 31 strikeouts over six appearances and four starts in 21 innings.
CJ Masciel was a standout for the Inland Valley Bucs. He hit .342 with 27 hits, 16 runs, eight extra-base hits, 11 RBI and 10 stolen bases over 25 games.
SOCAL COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Brett Finnel was a dominant starting pitcher for the Palm Springs Power. He made six appearances and three starts, with the Power winning all six games he appeared in while he was credited with four of them. He finished with an impressive 2.74 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and .212 opposing batting average.
WEST COAST LEAGUE
Michael Carpentier was a double threat at the plate, as he hit .259 with 22 hits, eight extra-base knocks, 15 RBI and 14 runs over 22 games. The catcher was also tremendous defensively and threw out an impressive number of would-be base stealers.
NORTHWOODS AND MAVERICKS LEAGUES
Reeve Holley spent the summer with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League. He had 26 runs, 17 hits and 15 stolen bases for the Rafters.
