RIVERSIDE – Sophomore defender Antonio Gomez has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Lancers' 2-0 season opening victory against Dixie State.
Gomez played all 90 minutes in the shutout and led a defensive unit who allowed just six shots on goal in St. George. He also assisted on Brian Gonzalez's game-winning goal in the ninth minute, the first assist of his collegiate career.
He is the third Lancer to earn WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, following former goalkeeper Albert Escuin (twice) and current teammate Thomas Beecham (once).
Gomez and the Lancers now prepare for their only match of the week, an away fixture against former WAC foe CSU Bakersfield on Thursday, Sept. 2., in Bakersfield.
